Hiccup, an undersized teen outcast and son of the village chieftain, wishing to become a dragon slayer like the other Vikings, injures a rare Night Fury dragon but is unable to bring himself to kill it. He instead helps and befriends the dragon, and quickly discovers that things are not exactly as they seem in the conflict between Vikings and dragons.

Kikka works as an official guard, her most recent assignment is to travel with fellow guard Bemelle to an allied town. The two find themselves on the shore of Sinnlos, a cursed lake of black water that is home to the Nixi; twisted creatures who take joy in drowning humans. But they are not the only ones seeking passage and a large group has no chance of making it across whole.
